Caspian Tern on Lake Champlain

April 16, 2011
Shelburne Bay

Caspian Terns nest in small numbers along Lake Champlain. They are a fairly recent arrival, with the first documented pair in Vermont discovered in 2001. Their population has been steadily increasing in the state, and this was the first sighting in the Vermont this year. The picture isn't half-bad, considering the difficulty of taking a photo by holding a camera up to the lens of a spotting scope and tracking a moving bird across the water.
